Day 2 Pelham AL to Maumelle AR

Another uneventful drive, essentially from Birmingham to Little Rock. Interstate and sunny skies the whole way. We passed through Memphis, as evidenced by the landmark below; it's much larger than it appears in the photo. 


And I was reminded once again, what a hub Memphis is, and how many trucks travel I-40. We were on the road a total of about 6 1/2 hours.

We stopped in Little Rock and visited Little Rock Central High School, a National Historic Site. We were both ignorant of the role the "Little Rock Nine" played in desegregation; the showdown between the governor and federal judges that brought a national spotlight on "separate but equal" schools. After weeks of chaos, they became the first 9 black students to attend Little Rock's Central High, a prestigious public high school still open today, 2400 students strong. 



Fun dinner at a little Cajun/creole place, a Caesar salad and sampler plate with red beans and rice, gumbo, and jambalaya and a side of hot water cornbread. If you're ever hungry in Maumelle, we'd recommend Boudreaux's!

Day 8: Grand Junction CO to Arches (Moab, UT)

 June 19th, 2024   Mileage  Start:  25039   End: 25236     Total: Day/Trip  197/2531 A relatively short hour and 40 minute drive, largely on I-70, then south. Had 10 a.m. reservations (and my Senior Parks Pass), sailed in at 9:48, whisked me right in. Pit stop at the visitors center, then we began the 18 mile drive through the park. There were roadside formations, short hikes to formations, and long hikes to formations. It was 94 degrees in the park. We didn't do any long hikes, but did several in the quarter-half mile range. Cliffs, hoodoos, balanced rocks, arches of course, and just some cool rock formations. Awed, humbled, thankful for such an amazing display of nature and God's handiwork. Day 6 Bartlesville, OK to Evergreen, CO

 June 17, 2024  Mileage  Start: 23953  End: 24632    Total:  Day/Trip  679/1927 A long drive, the longest of our trip. Mostly I-70, but a lot of empty 2-lanes before we got to 70. Blessed once again with clear skies and light traffic (except Denver at 4:30, but I anticipated that). On the road about 9 hours and 40 minutes total. The most memorable parts of the drive: lots of BIG wind farms, plus high winds that caused several areas of restricted visibility due to blowing dust. And farm land, farm land, farm land. And flat rocks. Went to dinner-surprise!- at a craft brewery 5 miles from the hotel, Evergreen Craft Brewery. Small and uncrowded, we got a flight, a NY-style wood-fired pizza, and a salad. All (yes, even the salad) were really good. For those keeping track, bottom to top: Belgian  Blonde, Mexican Amber Ale, Kolsch, and Belgian Golden Strong. Day 21 San Antonio, TX to Hammond, LA

 July 2, 2024   Mileage   Start:  29046  End:  29557  Total:  Day/Trip  511/6846 Another driving day. Finally getting back to some green surroundings, we've spent a lot of time in the desert. I started the day driving through San Antonio (7th largest population in the U.S.), and by lunchtime was driving through Houston (4th largest). Last week I drove through L.A. (2nd largest). All 3 were I-10. All 3 were crazy. 12 lanes. 16 lanes. Exits from both sides. Multiple lane exits. There has to be a better way.  No sightseeing today, just a couple things from the road: Encountered a first in east Texas today - a total touchscreen gas pump. Next, it's not very good, but it's an on-the-fly from the car - the Mississippi River at Baton Rouge. Everywhere I've ever crossed that river - St. Louis, Memphis, here, New Orleans - it's been impressive. And the bridges are BIG.
